Sarah Blake, Perdue retiree
Sarah Blake “Mom” Sarah, 82, daughter of the late Beulah Pitts and Al Wilson, was born in Accomack County, Va. May 27, 1931. Sarah departed this life at her home in Frankford Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.
She was educated at Pungoteague Elementary School and Mary Ann Smith High School in Accomack. She moved to Delaware in 1953, where she met and married Prophisry Blake.
“Mom” Sarah was employed by NCR (National Cash Register) in Millsboro for 12 years and then Perdue Inc. in Georgetown until her retirement in 1993.
Sarah accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Antioch African Methodist Church in Frankford. She served on the No. 2 Choir, Pastor’s Aid Committee and a member of Class No. 4. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 27: “The Lord is my light and my Salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the Strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid.” Her favorite song was, “I’m Coming up, On the rough side of the Mountain.” She enjoyed getting ready for Frankford Camp and attending service. On Feb. 18, 2012, she was honored at the Delaware Conference Lay Banquet for her devotion, piety and Christian character. She enjoyed cooking big Sunday dinners for her family, and making her famous lemon meringue pies. She also she enjoyed gardening, yard work, raising her chickens and going to the fields to cut greens with her son-in-law, Lawyer Hicks. “Mom” Sarah enjoyed going to the Delaware State Fair in Harrington. To have known her was to love her. She had a beautiful smile and was willing to help anyone she could.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Lillie Mae Taylor.
“Mom” Sarah leaves to cherish her loving memories, one son, Alvin (Lavern) Garrison of Salisbury, Md.; five daughters, Sally (Lawyer) Hicks, of Frankford, Eva “Louise” Hall of Frankford, Merriel Blake of Millsboro, Geraldine Blake and fiancé Maurice Massey of Frankford; and Rebecca Blake of Frankford; her adopted daughter Shan Hall of Seaford; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at Antioch A.M.E. Church, 194 Clayton Ave., Frankford, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
