Margaret M. Steele, registered nurse

Margaret M. Steele, 91, passed away with her family by her side Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at her son's home in Milton where she had been residing.

Margaret was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Bethlehem, Pa., daughter of the late Clyde and Sarah (Wilhelm) Apple.

After completing high school, Margaret continued her education at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, graduating with a nursing degree.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving her country proudly as a nurse during World War II. Margaret attained the rank of first lieutenant before completing her military commitment.

As a registered nurse, Margaret was employed at separate times with Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Chester, Pa., the Dover Air Force Base Hospital, and finally with Milford Memorial Hospital where she worked for 18 years before retiring in 1974.

In her leisure time, Margaret enjoyed china painting and loved playing bingo. She was a member of the Milford Senior Center, the Blue Hen VFW Post 6483 in Milford, and a devoted member of the Reformation Lutheran Church in Milford.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Steele in 1993; three brothers, Walter Apple, William Apple, and Clyde Apple; and a sister, Eleanor Brown.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donn S. and Jan Steele of Milton; a sister, Kathryn Stirling of Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren, Scott Steele and his wife Joanna, David Steele and his wife Kelly, and Daniel Steele; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan, 27, at the Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be held following the service at Cape Henlopen Memorial Park, Route 1, Milton.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Reformation Lutheran Church, 613 Lakeview Ave., Milford, DE 19963, or to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford.

Arrangements handled by Rogers Funeral Home, Milford.
