Robert L. Regan, M.D., 90, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Robert was born in Winona, Minn. March 3, 1923, son of the late Harold and Irene (Leu) Regan. After graduating high school at Gonzaga in Washington, D.C., he enrolled in college at Georgetown University. After graduating, he attended the Georgetown Medical School with a residency in OB/GYN. During this time, he also served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force Reserve.
As a physician, he spent many years in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia regions. He was on the staff at Providence Hospital in D.C., Fairfax Hospital in Virginia and a founding staff physician at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland, traveling the Beltway when it was only a dirt road.
As an avid golfer, he retired to a residence on the 17th fairway of Oyster Reef Golf Course on Hilton Head Island, S.C. But, always a physician, he applied for and received his South Carolina license and was appointed the director of Planned Parenthood. Later, he also became a civilian physician at the OB/GYN clinic of the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, S.C.
In 2003, he tried retirement again in Fairfield Glade, Tenn., because of its many golf courses. He was not on a fairway this time, but near a green where he practiced putting daily. Diagnosed with leukemia at Vanderbilt University Hospital, he returned north with fond memories of Rehoboth Beach from his Washington area days.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his sons, Robert and Michael Regan. He is survived by his loving wife Natalie (Marthouse) Regan; three daughters, Kelli and her husband Lee, Michele and her husband Sean and his little girl, Stephanie Irene; a son, Jeffrey and his wife Elizabeth; seven grandchildren: Alison, Nikki, Shannon, Kelsey, Andrea, Alexis and Natalie; and although not a son, James Broadhurst, who he loved as one.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 31, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. A reception will follow services. Interment will be private.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.
