Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Indian River firefighters responded to a blaze at Nalu restaurant in Dewey Beach about 9 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The fire began under the building at the corner of Dickinson Avenue and Route 1, and firefighters had it under control quickly thanks to the help of the building's sprinkler system.

"The fire spread into the pump room on the first floor," said Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company spokesman Warren Jones. "When it did, the sprinkler system activated and contained it to that room."

When firefighters arrived, they had to find the source of the fire under the building. Jones said they were fortunate the sprinkler system kept the fire in check.

"That could've been a very serious fire," he said, noting the structure was an older building with a wood frame.

No injuries were reported. The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office had personnel on the scene determining the cause and assessing the damage. A report has not been released.
