The Doc & Chef series continues Feb. 24 at Fish On in Lewes

Series stresses local healthy and tasty foods that are easy to prepare
February 14, 2014

Winner of the James Beard Foundation's 2014 Humanitarian of the Year Award Matt Haley and local physician Dr. Uday Jani are teaming up to present their next installment of the Doc & Chef series, which focuses on healthy, simple-to-prepare food. The free cooking demonstration and educational seminar is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24, at Fish On in the Villages of Five Points in Lewes.

“We want to emphasize how many tasty, healthy foods are available locally to consumers,” says Jani, a longtime area physician, who has recently added a personalized concierge practice focusing on wellness. “Cooking with them is easy - you don’t need any special training.”

Some of the ingredients Haley and Jani will showcase might surprise guests. “Onion, garlic, ginger and olive oil all offer health benefits,” says Jani.

“Nuts are high in omega-3. You can gain the benefits of flaxseed just by sprinkling some on your salad or in your soup,” adds Haley.

Several of the other ingredients showcased during the classes are grown in the area. “We want to focus on healthy, local eating,” says Haley, who owns seven coastal Delaware restaurants. “We have so many amazing farms and farm markets around here. We’re so fortunate to have such great resources. Buying local is not only better for our health, but it also supports the area economy.”

The doc and the chef will also give consumers insight into how to use some of today’s newly popular health foods, such as quinoa. The ancient grain has recently become a chef favorite, but many people have commented to Haley they find themselves stumped when it comes to home applications and preparations. “It can be used as a side dish, a main course or even as a cold salad,” he says. “It’s a remarkably easy ingredient to integrate at almost any point in your diet.”

For more information and to register, call Lisa Wheeler at 302-644-1200. This is a free series, but a $10 donation to Haley’s Global Delaware Fund will be accepted at the door. Space is limited, and this event will fill up quickly.

Located in Milton, Jani is board certified in internal medicine. In 2012, he completed a two-year integrative medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil, the renowned founder of integrative medicine. He now focuses on prevention as well as healing.

An award winner in multiple publications across Delmarva for Best Chef and Best Restaurateur, Haley’s interests run the culinary gamut. Along with owning seven restaurants, he also owns Plate Catering as well as Highwater Management and Haley/ Kammerer Consulting, the region’s premier hospitality management and hospitality consulting firms, respectively. In addition, he is the founder of The Global Delaware Fund, a nonprofit that helps people of all ages both in Delaware and around the world.
