Now is the time for building a pool for school and community use, as the editorial of the Jan 7-9 issue clearly justifies. It is worth adding to the points made in the editorial, especially with regard to a pool being a significant resource for athletes.
The region has a rich and expanding circle of talented amateur and professional athletes, many of whom focus on triathlons and other multi-sport activity. There is rapidly growing interest in multi-sport coaching and training nationally and locally. The Rehoboth Beach area could easily become a hub for multi-sport training, but the potential is severely impeded by the absence of aquatic resources.
As pointed out, the region’s only pool, at the Sussex Family YMCA, serves a host of constituencies and there is growing competition among them for pool time. The times available for athletes to use the pool, in the manner their training requires, is very limited and inflexible and seems a relatively low priority in the pool’s scheduled use. Some of our dedicated athletes are traveling to other resources in places such as Bethany and Dover to capture swim time that is critical to their achievement.
Failing to build the resources that would create an attractive destination for trainers, coaches, competitors and their families and friends would stand in the way of capturing many opportunities for the immediate region.
