Beacon girls basketball team deserves praise

February 17, 2014

Every so often in youth athletics the perfect combination of players and coaches come together to make an extraordinary team.  The Beacon Middle School girls basketball team is just such team.  At this writing, with one game remaining in an unofficial post-season tournament, the Lady Vikings of Beacon are not only undefeated, but have not even experienced a close game.

What makes them so accomplished and enjoyable to watch? They are well-coached and play as a team.  In my 40-plus years of watching youth sports on only a few occasions have I witnessed such a combination of unselfish team play and competent coaching at the middle school level.  On offense, every player looks up the court to advance the ball, and for a teammate in a better position to score.

On defense, the half-court trap is executed successfully, causing numerous turnovers, and their disciplined zone defense rarely allows an uncontested shot from opponents.  Most importantly, regardless of whether the most or least experienced players are in the game, these team basketball fundamentals are evident.

Congratulations to the Beacon Middle School girls basketball coaches and players for an exceptional season, and for the enjoyment of watching you play.  Cape High coaches have good reason to be encouraged regarding their future.
