Florence Gray Bergen, family matriarch

Florence Elizabeth Gray Bergen, 87, of Lewes, formerly of New Jersey, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. She was born the second child of John L. Gray and Florence (nee) Gibbs Gray in Philadelphia, Pa. Aug. 27, 1926.

Florence Elizabeth was predeceased by her mother in infancy and her father remarried Sally Elizabeth. Sally Elizabeth and her second husband, Gusuv Warner, loved and raised Florence Elizabeth. Florence Elizabeth Bergen is survived by her "big" brother, John Gray. Nicknaming each other Honey and Buddy, they were reunited as adults as John's wife Gertrude, now deceased, encouraged the reunion. Florence married Edwin Ross Bergen Aug. 15, 1946. They raised their six children in Wildwood, N.J. and Point Pleasant, N.J.

She is survived by her children, Edwin F. Bergen and wife Kellie, Michael and wife Kathy, and Trudy (Florence Gertrude Bergen) Brown. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Ross and their children

Walter, Sally, and Gus and children in love, Pat, Gayle and Ed. Florence was the grandmother of nine and great-grandmother to 11.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
