Long Neck Rotary presents $1,000 to Food Bank of Delaware

March 1, 2014

As part of its mission to serve the community, Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club President Harry Hiltner presented Chad Robinson, Milford Branch director of Food Bank of Delaware, a check for $1,000 at the club's Feb. 18 breakfast meeting. The money was earmarked to support the Food Bank’s backpack program, which provides 5,000 children, approximately 1,050 of whom reside in Sussex County, with a supply of food to last them through the weekend.

This backpack program is to complement the nutrition the children receive at their schools via state-subsidized lunch and breakfast programs and the Food Bank’s after-school snack program.

This is the first year the club has donated to the Food Bank of Delaware, using proceeds from its popular golf outing held at The Peninsula each year in mid-June. The club voted to donate to the Food Bank after a presentation Robinson had given the club in late 2013 on the Food Bank’s efforts to assist the thousands of hungry in Delaware, including culinary arts training to students who later find job placement in area restaurants.

The backpack program was particularly appealing to the club’s mission to serve the community due to its impact in helping children find proper nourishment over weekends where they might not otherwise.

The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club celebrates its fifth year as a club in 2014. Meetings are held weekly at 7:30 a.m., Tuesdays at the Ocean Grill II Restaurant on Long Neck Road. Visitors and prospective members are welcome.
