James William Gibbs Jr., 76, departed this life into the peaceful, loving arms of Jesus Christ Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at Atlantic Shores in Millsboro.
He was born Jan. 5, 1938, in Englehard, N.C. He received his education at the Richard Allen School in Georgetown. He worked at Swift Poultry, Paramount Poultry and Perdue. He loved music and playing the guitar. His grandchildren were the loves of his life. He loved his clothes, and nobody could outdress him for his style. His favorite karate person was Bruce Lee, and he tried to wear his hair like him.
He met Shirley Cannon, and to their union four children were born. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ola Gibbs; and one brother, Wilbert Gibbs. He leaves to cherish his memories his father, James William Gibbs Sr.; his children, Ola Aslam of Salisbury, Md., Donna Gibbs of Seaford, Michelle Gibbs of Bridgeville, and Daniella Gibbs of Bridgeville; nine siblings, Lola (Eugene) Jackson of Seaford, Mable (Donald) Hopkins of Georgetown, Lilly (Robert) Williams of Harbeson, Kay Purnell of Georgetown, Thomas (Ora) Gibbs Sr. of Georgia, Frank (Mary) Gibbs of Georgetown, Robert Gibbs of Lincoln, Kenny (Melvina) Gibbs of Harbeson, and Joetta (William) Harmon of Belltown; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Gibbs of Boston, Mass.; a special companion, Margaret Horsey; three special aunts, Delores Andrews of Seaford, Patricia Mann of Seaford, and Jesse Cole of New York; one uncle, Joseph Posey of New York; one special son-in-law, Muhummed Aslam Tarer; one dear, devoted friend, Robert Everette; one cousin raised with him, Mark Mann; four special grandchildren, Shaykra, Ty'Jae, Aaliyah, and Aba; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, March 1, at Jesus is Lord Church of Deliverance in Georgetown, with a viewing from 11 a.m. to noon. Evangelist Frank Gibbs II will deliver the eulogy.
