Newark man killed in Route 1 crash

State police seek witnesses to collision at Route 16
March 18, 2014

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash March 18 that claimed the life of a 25-year-old Newark man.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., as Daniel J. Murray was operating a 1996 Nissan Maxima southbound on Route 1 in the left lane approaching the intersection with Route 16.  A 1993 Ford Aeromax LTL 9000 dump truck hauling a backhoe on a flatbed trailer was stopped for a red traffic signal in the northbound left turn lane waiting to turn westbound on Route 16.  When the traffic signal for the northbound left turn lane turned green, the dump truck entered into the intersection to continue onto Route 16.  At the same time, the Nissan Maxima failed to stop for the southbound red signal and struck the truck in the right front corner causing the passenger vehicle to spin counter-clockwise and continue in a westerly direction before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Route 16.  The unloaded dump truck and the trailer came to a controlled stop in the intersection.

Murray, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alvin E. Mast, who was properly restrained and the lone occupant of the dump truck, was not injured in the collision.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident.  Route 1 southbound at Route 16 was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
