The Cape Henlopen girls' soccer team opened the season March 27 against Milford on the sprint turf pitch of Champions Stadium and got out of the blocks fast, racing to a 4-0 halftime advantage, then coasting home for a 5-0 victory.

Cape’s prolific scorer, Shelby Thomas, had the hat trick - three goals - 18 minutes into the game as Cassandra Garcia and Mallory McDonald each assisted on a goal.

Goal four of the first half came off the left foot of exchange student Amalie Maroey, who cranked one from soccer downtown.

Cape’s second-half goal was scored by Maddie Smith 59 minutes into the game on an assist from McDonald.

Cape outshot Milford 12-2 and had a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Cape’s Olivia Barratto had 2 saves on the only shots she saw all night, while Amber Bliss had 7 saves for Milford.

Cape was scheduled to play at Sussex Central Tuesday, April 1, then jump an early season “what’s up” game at Sussex Tech. The Ravens have most players back from last season’s 14-1 squad.

Cape finished the season last year 8-6-1, being shut out in their last three games, losing to Sussex Tech 1-0, Polytech 2-0 and Caesar Rodney 6-0.
