James Howard Adkins Jr., 77, of Lewes, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Lewes June 17, 1936, son of the late James H. and Florence (Hammond) Adkins Sr. Howard was a carpenter, first working for Marvin Ingram and then for the Stockley Center in Georgetown for 16 years, retiring in 1997. After his retirement from the State of Delaware, he owned and operated his own grass cutting business.
Howard was a life member of the Lewes Fire Company with 38 years of service. He enjoyed clamming, woodworking and riding his tractor. Howard will always be in the hearts of his family and never forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Joyce (Phillips) Adkins; a daughter, Annette Allman; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Allman and Jacqueline Allman; two great-grandchildren, Cohen Bonneville and Damian Jewell; and a sister, Carolyn Quigley.
A celebration of his life with firefighter honors will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 4, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Howard's name to Compassionate Care Hospice, 28467 DuPont Blvd., Suite 6, Millsboro, DE 19966.
