Crash on Cave Neck Road injures nine

April 4, 2014

Cave Neck Road near Milton has been reopened following a two-vehicle crash near the Round Pole Bridge Road intersection that injured nine people.

Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said the crash, involving an SUV and a Sposato Landscape Co. truck, took place about 6:41 a.m., when a Ford Escape, driven by Mary A. Ruark, 63, of Milton, failed to stop for a stop sign.

Angel L. Jimenez was operating a 2000 Ford E350 van eastbound on Cave Neck Road. The van was unable to avoid the collision and struck the SUV on the passenger side, Fournier said.

Ruark, who was properly restrained, was extracted from the SUV and airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Medical Center where she was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fournier said Jimenez, who was properly restrained, was uninjured and did not require medical attention. Five passengers in the van were transported to Beebe Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others were taken to Milford Memorial, also with non-life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers did not require any medical attention.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into this incident, and charges are pending. The crash closed Cave Neck Road for about two hours while police investigated.

Cape Henlopen School District Director of Administrative Services Brian Bassett said a school bus attempting to avoid the police detour on Cave Neck Road got stuck in mud and had to be towed. There were no injuries, and all students on the bus arrived at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School at 7:35 a.m., only a few minutes later than usual.

Editor's Note: This corrects an earlier account that identified the intersection as Hudson Road. That is a location where traffic was rerouted; police said the accident itself was at Round Pole Bridge Road.
