Bring on the bacon creations, and bring them to Dewey Beach.
Bacon lovers from Delaware and beyond will soon be descending on Dewey Beach for the first-ever Dewey Beach Bacon Fest Saturday, April 26.
“I think it’s going to be a blast,” said Justin Redefer, event organizer. “These things are wildly popular all over the country. From 3 to 93, everybody loves bacon. ”
Redefer said he thought of the idea for last year’s spring season, but couldn’t get the permits done fast enough. He added that this is the only event of its kind in Delaware.
In an April 4 phone interview, Redefer said more than 200 wristbands had already been sold and the festival’s Facebook page had over 1,000 likes. Redefer said it’s also mentioned on the everything-bacon website Bacon Today’s upcoming events page.
“It’s going to be fun, good spirited,” said Redefer. “I’ve heard that people might be making things like bacon flavored beer and bacon ice cream.”
Redefer said almost every restaurant open this time of year is participating, including The Starboard, Rusty Rudder, My Thai, Port, Nalu Hawaiian Surf Bar & Grill, Sharky’s Grill, Hammerheads, Woody’s East Coast Bar & Grill, Gary’s Dewey Beach Grill and Scully’s Ocean Side Café.
There will also be a couple of specialized bacon-loving food vendors at the event – Sum Pig Food Truck and Bacon Jams, both from Philadelphia.
Participants will begin and end their taste testing at The Starboard. Redefer said he’s excited to see what food creations people will come up with to win the coveted title of Best Bacon on the Beach.
Registration on the day of the event is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the bacon creations crawl beginning at 1:30 p.m. Redefer expects the event to end by 5 p.m.
Tickets for are still available and can be purchased under the Shop iD link of the website iDewey.com. There are two ticket categories – $40 for VIP and $12 for general admission. Tickets will be available onsite the day of the event.
Redefer said festival T-shirts are on sale until April 16 for participants who want to wear them during the event. A few will be available at the event, but orders will be taken and T-shirts will be shipped.
