Perfect weather leads to colorful opening day

Lewes Little League announces renovation campaign
April 19, 2014

The colors of spring were outdone by the myriad colors of team shirts filling the streets of Lewes April 12 during the annual Lewes Little League opening day parade.

Teams, parents and coaches marched down Savannah Road to Second Street and to the park to begin the season.

During the ceremony, Lewes Little League President Mike Ciabottini announced a $200,000 campaign to rebuild the league's concession stand/field house and upgrade lights. The league is selling bricks to be displayed at the park to raise money. He said the fund drive was jump started with a $10,000 Schell Brothers donation, putting the total before opening day at $16,000.

Three people were honored for their dedication. The Faust family – represented by Skip and his mother, Janet – have been league supporters for four generations. Skip, a former player, is a coach, parent and board member. Janet helped start the girls' softball program in 1974.

The league also honored long-time supporter Dave Vitella, who not only has been involved with Lewes Little League, but helped form the Bagel Bombers program allowing extended play during the spring, summer and fall for 150 players.

Logan Shuttleworth sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and Drew and son Luke Johnson recited the Little League pledge for players and parents.

Lewes Little League – in its 57th year – has 27 teams with 315 players. The national organization is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2014.
