Raymond Thorp, Bell Atlantic retiree

Raymond Thorp, 82, of Millsboro passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at his home.

Ray was born in Christiana, son of the late Alma and Isaac Thorp. He was a graduate of Newark High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Ray worked for Bell Telephone and Bell Atlantic for 34 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard and AARP. He coached Little League and was a Boy Scout leader. Ray enjoyed crabbing, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Isaac, Albert, Herman and Robert; two sisters, Alma and Mary; and a grandson Zachary. He is survived by his loving wife Joan of 48 years; a son, Jeff Gustafson and his wife Karen; a daughter, Julie Bernheimer and her husband Joe; five grandchildren, Emily Koss (Jeff), Kyle, Rebecca, Camryn and Tess; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Landon. Ray is also survived by his three brothers, William, Charles and Donald; and sisters Dora Harbeck, Anita Harper and Evelyn Bell.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 21, at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ray’s memory to the National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
