April 28, 2014

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Lewes Public Library and Movies at Midway will present “Key of Life” as May’s film for the Around the World series of critically acclaimed, international independent films. The comedy from Japan will be presented at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway.

The generosity of Movies at Midway enables admission to this film series to be free and open to the public.

“Key of Life," an entertaining comedy directed by Kenji Uchida, combines humor, romance, and stolen identities as the lives of three people unexpectedly intertwine. Sakurai is a struggling, unlucky, out-of-work actor. Soothing his worries at a bathhouse, he finds opportunity when a man named Kondo (who is a contract killer) takes a fall and loses his memory. Sakura decides to take on Kondo’s identity while leaving his old existence to the injured stranger. Each man struggles to deal with the unknowns of his new life and the often amusing challenges they bring.

Kanae, a beautiful career woman, has her wedding completely planned, except that she needs a groom. While Sakura begins to enjoy the fast life, Kondo meets Kanae, who becomes eager to help him overcome amnesia and rebuild his life. As Kondo’s memory slowly returns, the identity switch begins to unravel and all three attempt to resolve which parts of their old and new lives they will hold on to, and which they will leave behind. The film stars Masato Sakai (Sakurai), Teruyuki Kagawa (Kondo), and Ryoko Hirosue (Kanae).
