DBCC to hold breast cancer recognition awards May 28
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition announces the inaugural Shining Light Awards Ceremony at the University of Delaware STAR Campus at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 28.
Awards will be presented to individuals and companies in the following categories: Gregg and Stacey Bacchieri for Spotlight on Philanthropy; Elizabeth Bours for Spotlight on Survivorship; Bayhealth Medical Center for Spotlight on Health Care Delivery - Company; Diana Dickson-Witmer, MD, FACS for Spotlight on Health Care Delivery - Individual; and Perdue Farms Milford Plant for Spotlight on Business. Also, DBCC will recognize members of the Pink Ribbon Circle and the Maureen Lauterbach Bequest Society.
The awards ceremony will recognize those who have made significant contributions to the advancements made toward ending breast cancer in Delaware and serve to motivate and inspire others to be champions of the cause. The event will run through 8 p.m. and includes tours of the University of Delaware’s Health Science Building on the newly renovated STAR Campus. The STAR Campus, built on the former Chrysler site on South College Avenue in Newark, integrates academics with public and private partners in a medical environment.
Delaware's first lady Carla Markell, a notable supporter of DBCC, has expressed her excitement for the inaugural Shining Light Awards, “As a breast cancer survivor and former DBCC board member, I am both familiar with the struggles of those facing breast cancer, and the wonderful support and programs DBCC offers those touched by the disease. DBCC’s programs are made possible due to the support of so many individuals and businesses in the community. I am positive that the Shining Light Awards will motivate and inspire others.”
“We are very excited because these are the first breast cancer recognition awards being offered in the state of Delaware,” said Vicky Cooke, DBCC executive director. “We can’t wait to recognize the selected winners from our community and set the tone for others to follow in their footsteps. Together, we hope to end breast cancer.” DBCC supports Deadline 2020, the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s strategic plan to know how to end breast cancer by Jan. 1, 2020.
Proceeds from the Shining Light Awards will benefit DBCC’s programs that increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms, and provide support and resources to men and women in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing a recurrence of breast cancer.
