May 6, 2014

Delmarva Board Sports will kick off the 2014 paddleboarding season by announcing Youth Stand Up Paddle Days the weekend of May 16-19. Organized by the Stand Up Paddle Industry Association, paddleboard organizations all around the country and in Canada will be holding local events to introduce kids and their families to stand up paddleboarding.

On Delmarva, the inaugural Youth Stand Up Paddle Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, May 18, at Tower Road bayside beach on Route 1 south of Dewey Beach. Rain date is Monday, May 19, from 6 to 8 p.m.

All kids ages 8 and up can come out and try paddle boarding for only $5. Parents can take advantage of reduced rates for self-serve paddleboard rentals. To participate, kids must know how to swim, must wear life vests and must have a parent or adult guardian present to sign a waiver. To register a child, call 302-260-9008 by Friday, May 16.

During the event, kids can learn about and sign up for a new paddle boarding team that will be active during June, called the Sussex County Paddle Board Team and sponsored by Delmarva Board Sports. Biweekly paddleboard practices held in Rehoboth and Fenwick Island will prepare kids for their first fun race to be held Saturday, June 28, at Paddle Second Chance, www.paddlesecondchance.com, at Holts Landing State Park. Each practice is only $5 and includes coaches, gear and instruction. To register for the kids' race division costs $20 and includes food, beverage, entertainment and a T-shirt. Registration for adults will also be available.

Sussex County Paddle Board Team is a short commitment and affordable for families with multiple kids, said Janis Markopoulos, owner of Delmarva Board Sports. The  goal is to introduce the sport of paddleboarding to everyone, including kids, as a healthy and fun way to enjoy family time together along the beautiful waterways of Sussex County.

Each practice is about one hour. Paddle boards, safety equipment, trained coaches and certified SUP instructors will be on hand. Self-serve paddleboard rentals will be available by reservation for SUP team parents at a reduced rate during the practice sessions, so bring the whole family.

Sussex County Paddle Board Team is seeking volunteers and business sponsors with experience in little league team sports management, to help get this new team up and running. Volunteers can call Janis at 302-260-9008.
