Cape High's Leo Club knows how to turn mulch into moolah.
This is the third year the club has held a mulch fundraiser, and they sold more bags than ever.
“Our goal this year was to sell over 3,000 bags,” said Leo Club President Maggie Delp. Instead, club members sold over 5,000.
“The Leo Club members worked very hard to make this fundraiser successful,” she said.
Club advisor Mike Connors said the fundraiser has grown each year since it began. “It's growing by leaps and bounds,” he said. “It's easy and everyone buys mulch.”
A lot of orders are repeat customers; about 25 orders came in after a short release ran in the Cape Gazette, he said.
Bags of mulch were stacked in the high school parking lot in April, waiting for delivery. Connors said prices are competitive with area stores, and delivery is included.
“It's a no-brainer,” Connors said. “A lot of people are starting to use us year-after-year.”
Connors said the club thanks Andrew Best from Best Ace Hardware for helping pay for delivery costs and Ed Fleming from Lawns Unlimited who donated two work trucks and trailers used to deliver the mulch.
Money raised will go to local groups to be determined by the group, Connors said.
“People are saying see you next year. We're building relationships with the community, and that's what Leo Club is about,” Connors said.
