Donald L. Powell, Purple Heart recipient

Donald L. Powell, 85, of Millsboro, formerly of Wilmington, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Don served in the Navy during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart. He retired in 1991 from Boeing Helicopter in Ridley Park, Pa. after 28 years of service.

He was an avid golfer, fisherma, and boater where he obtained his captain’s license in 1998. Don was also a lifetime member of American Legion Stall Post 30 in New Castle and a member of AMVETS Post 2 in Millsboro and the Casa Fishing Club. He was a loving, caring and compassionate person, and will be truly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marc Powell and Rose Bogia; a brother, Robert Powell; two sons, Donald L. Powell Jr. and Terry Powell; and a stepson, William Dickinson. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Jean Powell; a son, Marc Powell of North Carolina; daughter-in-law Andrea Dickinson; two grandchildren, Valerie Dickinson, Keith Dickinson and his wife Olivia; and a great-grandson, Trey Dickinson all of Lewes. He is also survived by a sister, Marilyn Samluck and her husband Stanley of Newark; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 8, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be held privately at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Don’s name to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
