Mary Ann King Smith, retired manager

Mary Ann (King) Smith of Milton, 82, died Sunday, May 4, 2014, in Milton following a brief illness.

Mary Ann was born Nov. 29, 1931, as Mary Ann King, daughter of James and Catherine King, formerly of Morristown, N.J.

Following her graduation as class salutatorian at age 18 from Morristown High School, Mary Ann took a secretarial job at Monroe Calculating in Morris Plains, N.J. There she was reacquainted with a former classmate of MHS, Walter B. Smith; they were married July 17, 1952, and resided in Mendham N.J. until 1992. They had two children, Kathleen and Janet, and were active members in their local community, including Walter‘s role as chief of police in Mendham.

Once both of her children were in school full time, Mary Ann returned to work as office manager for the Black Horse Inn in Mendham, where she worked for 14 years. She moved on to become the general manager for Mendham Ford where she worked until she retired in 1991.

Mary Ann and Walter moved from their home in Mendham, to a home in Milton in 1992 where they have lived for the past 22 years.  Mary Ann was an active member of the Sylvan Acres Board as well as highly engaged in the lives and schooling of her grandchildren, Sean, who received an MBA from Lynn University in 2012, and Ashlyn, currently a junior at Centenary College in New Jersey. The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2012.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Walter; her daughter Kathleen and Partner Bill of Budd Lake, N.J.; her daughter, Janet and husband Roy of Bridgewater, N.J.; her two grandchildren, Sean and Ashlyn; and brother, Joseph Robert King of Mendham.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 in memory of Mary Ann Smith.
