Red Cross recognizes nurses during National Nurses Week May 6-12

May 9, 2014

During National Nurses Week May 6-12, the American Red Cross recognized the important contributions of its nurses.

The theme for this year’s National Nurses Week was Nurses: Leading the Way, which highlighted nurses as leaders at the bedside, in the boardroom, throughout communities, and in the halls of government. For more than 125 years, nurses have been an important part of the mission of the Red Cross, providing assistance during times of disaster and conflict.

Nursing has a strong legacy with the American Red Cross, and 20,000 nurses are in service across the organization today. Nurses consistently rank first as the most trusted profession in the United States. The RN Network is the operational arm for Red Cross nursing and health function. Throughout the country, nurses serve in management and supervisory roles at Red Cross chapter and blood service regions, many in executive positions. Nurses hold leadership roles as regional, state and division nurse leaders and as members of the Red Cross National Board of Governors as well as board members on the local level.

The American Red Cross Delmarva Region has three exceptional nurses as part of its Regional Nurse Network.

Cathleen Rossi-McLaughlin (“Rossi”) is the Delaware State Nurse Lead as well as a member of the local Red Cross Board of Directors. She is the Nemours Enterprise Emergency Management/Disaster Preparedness Officer and covers the Delaware Valley as well as Jacksonville, Orlando, and Pensacola, Fla. In addition, Rossi is a retired lieutenant colonel with the United States Air Force, Nurse Corps, serving most of her career overseas as a flight nurse and chief nurse of an aero staging unit.

Joining Rossi-McLaughlin is Linda J. Hickman, PhD, MBA, RN, FACHE. Hickman is the Acting Maryland State Nurse Lead and a member of the local Red Cross Board of Directors. Currently, she is an assistant professor in the Health Services Leadership and Management graduate program at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing.

For 15 years, Sandra Glenn-Vernon BSN, RN, CCRN has been a Nurse Clinician Level IV PICU at Nemours/AI DuPont Hospital for Children. She joins the Red Cross Regional Nurse Network as the Regional Nurse Lead for Delaware.  She is also a graduate student at the University of Maryland School of Nursing for Public/Community Health.
