Sussex Tech to hold graduation May 29

May 19, 2014

Graduation ceremonies for the class of 2014 at Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown will take place Thursday, May 29, rain or shine. The processional will begin at 6 p.m., and the ceremony will immediately follow. Guest speaker will be Dr. John Sell, a Sussex Tech assistant principal and the 2013 Delaware State Teacher of the Year.

Sell taught English for 22 years before becoming an assistant principal at Sussex Tech last fall after being honored as the 2013 Delaware State Teacher of the Year. He was one of the first teachers at Sussex Tech to begin using online quizzes for students and to put all course materials online for parents and students.

Sell said, “Being able to help students laugh and enjoy the learning process is key to helping them become lifelong learners who will not see reading or writing or studying as tedious tasks and hurdles, but rather as entertaining endeavors that can unlock a treasure trove of opportunities for a better and more fulfilling life.” His charisma and ability to connect with students so naturally are the reasons the senior class invited him to be their commencement speaker.

Family and friends are invited to the commencement ceremonies. If held outside in Raven Stadium, no tickets are necessary, and access to the stadium begins at 4:30 p.m. Seating and handicap accessibility are available on both sides of the field. Tickets are required for the stadium disability seating area for the handicapped person and one escort only. Call the school at 302-856-0961 before Friday, May 23, to obtain handicap seating and parking tickets.

Pictures and videotaping may be done along the fence to each side of the handicap seating. Spectators may not enter onto the field until after the conclusion of ceremonies.

In the event of rain, the commencement ceremonies will be held in the gymnasium. Because of the limited space, tickets are required by adults and children of any age to enter the school. During graduation rehearsal Wednesday, May 28, graduates will each receive three tickets for gymnasium admittance plus two run-over admittance tickets. Guests in the gymnasium are asked to remain seated in the bleachers during the entire ceremony.

The two runover guests will be allowed to view the ceremonies via television in either the cafeteria or other designated areas. Disabled guests with handicap tickets will be admitted into the school at 4:30 p.m., and the doors will open for all other ticket holders at 5 p.m.

Decision about the weather will be made by noon and notice will be placed on the school’s webpage at www.sussexvt.k12.de.us.

Graduation practice for all seniors will be held Wednesday, May 28, from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Seniors must attend. The senior picnic will be held after rehearsal. The rehearsal and picnic are for Sussex Tech seniors only.

The Academic Awards Ceremony will be Tuesday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. Over $3 million worth of awards and scholarships will be presented to members of the class of 2014.
