Cape soccer defeats Royals 2-1, falls to Lake 1-3

The Cape Henlopen girls' soccer squad eyed a state tourney bid at 9-4-1 as they defeated a tough Delmarva Christian team 2-1 May 8 but dropped a 3-1 match-up with Lake Forest May 9.

Senior striker Shelby Thomas scored both goals in the win over the Royals with the game-winning goal coming at 79:56. Amanda Atkinson and Maddie Smith assisted on the scores.

The Vikings outshot the Royals 12-5 and held a 6-3 edge on penalty corners. Cape goalie Olivia Baratto had 4 stops in the cage.

Cassandra Garcia headed in the lone goal for the Lady Vikings off a cross from Shelby Thomas in the loss to the Lake Forest Spartans.

The Vikings finish the regular season Wednesday, May 14, as they travel to Smyrna for a 4 p.m. game with the Eagles.
