Cape baseball goes from cliff jumping to free falling

Cape baseball jumped off the cliff in Hawaii then fell off the cliff back on the mainland. The script doesn’t make sense and the two events are unrelated, but a good team came back after spring break with a record of 7-4 and three weeks later is 7-10 facing Saint Mark’s, 15-2, or a rainout Friday, May 16.

The Senior Day game will be played Saturday if rained out Friday.

The team has talent, and just before the Hawaiian vacation had beaten both Salesianum and Sussex Tech on the road. But the Vikings have lost six in a row and look like a definite no for postseason play.

Smyrna was a typical game of Cape losing a lead in the middle innings. David Kennedy, a left-hand-hitting compact truck at the plate, uncoiled and sent a Corey Everage pitch over the left-field fence, giving Cape a 3-1 lead. The next batter up, David Kwan, hit the same fence on the fly for a standup double and died on second base.

The Eagles then posted seven unanswered runs over the next three innings and went on to win 8-3. Cape posted four errors on the day, including two on a sacrifice bunt that scored the runner from first base.

Kennedy was three for three with a double and a home run, while Kwan had two hits including a double.

Everage went the distance for Smyrna, scattering 6 hits and yielding 3 runs. The Eagles improved to 14-4 on the season.
