Lloyd G. Bates, retired FBI agent

Lloyd G. Bates, 76, of Lewes, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born Nov. 8, 1937, in China Grove, N.C., son of the late Clyde and Myrtle (Hollifield) Bates.

Mr. Bates graduated from North Cove High School in North Cove, N.C. in 1956. He attended Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C. and the University of Maryland.

Following his graduation from college, Mr. Bates worked as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1959 to 1969. For the next 20 years, Mr. Bates worked in Corporate Security for Aramark until his retirement.

He didn't completely retire though, but worked part-time for BICS, a unit of the federal government, as a consultant until the winter of 2013.

Mr. Bates was active in his community where he was a volunteer teacher with the Thresholds program at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown. He was also a member of the Ex-FBI Agents Association. Mr. Bates loved to debate and could take on debating over politics any day.

His passion in life was his vegetable garden which included 38 different varieties of vegetables. Mr. Bates had many hobbies some of which included photography, golfing, hunting and fishing in the local waters. When weather permitted, he enjoyed boating and always took his beloved canine friend for a ride. He was a great story teller whose many stories were often told over the dinner table with his family. Mr. Bates was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, brother-in-law and dear friend who will be missed by all.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Bates. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Patricia L. (Barthmaier) Bates; two daughters: Jennifer Conklyn and Janine Leeper and her husband Matthew all of Wayne, Pa.; his grandson, Ryan Conklyn and granddaughter, Elly Conklyn both of Wayne; his sister, Shirley Bartlett and her husband Dealo of Marion, N.C.; his brother, Joe Bond of Wilkeboro, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Marie Barthmaier of Lewes; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m., at Donohue Funeral Home, 366 W. Lancaster Ave., Wayne, PA 19087, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
