Big Brothers, Big Sisters bowl event raises $30,009

They bowled, they laughed, they dressed up in '60s garb and they raised a lot of money for the Sussex County Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.

On Wednesday, May 7, 35 teams and 175 participants filled the Milford Bowling Lanes to raise money to help the program that matches boys and girls from single-parent homes with adults who spend time with them and add quality and love to their lives.

Ray Quillen, program director for Sussex County, said this year's event was the most successful ever.  "Our fundraiser was by far the most successful for Big Brothers and Big Sisters this year in Delaware."

Titled Bowl for Kids' Sake, this year's 33rd annual event encouraged people to dress up in hippie clothing and accessories.  Many dove into the spirit of the love children and even bowled a few strikes while eating pizza donated by Grotto and listening to the Fifth Dimension playing "Let The Love Shine In" over the house speaker system.  With all the smiling and dollars raised for a good cause, the event felt like the dawning of the age of Aquarius.

The mission statement for Big Brothers and Big Sisters is "To create and support relationships that provide consistent, positive, one-to-one interaction between a single-parent child and an adult volunteer who will be an advisor and friend on the journey from childhood to adulthood."
