Cape golf team posts one of its best-ever season records
The 2014 Cape Henlopen High School Vikings golf team players truly distinguished themselves with their May 15 victory over the Dover High Senators at Maple Dale CC, 181-196.
The win pushed the Vikings to a regular season 12-2 record, a mark that hadn’t been reached by past Cape golf teams since about a dozen years ago.
Head coach Claudio Smarrelli said, “I couldn’t be prouder of these kids. They’ve been just great, with a great attitude and a real team spirit. And they’ve really benefited from the time they’ve spent with Samantha Purple, my assistant coach. She’s been a big part of their success.”
Mike DeStasio won medalist honors against Dover with his 42. “I had a pretty steady round - some pars, some bogeys, and this time no double or triple bogeys. I also got lucky. On the 11th hole I skulled a shot over the green and out of bounds. But my next shot from the same place finished right next to the hole, so it was just a bogey.”
Mason Jones continued his steady contributions to the team scores with his 44. “I played like crap on the 18th hole, and bogeyed three other holes, and that was it,” he said.
Luke Branner shot a 47, which he described as a “pretty decent round. I had mostly pars and bogeys, except for a 9 on the 17th hole. I went O.B. on my drive with a hybrid,” he said.
Maddie Baptiste finished the team scoring against Dover with her 48. “I started with a triple bogey on the 15th hole. I had a hard time getting off the tee, but my second shots were OK. I like this course. It has a nice mix of tight holes and some that are open,” she said.
Next up for the Vikings was to be the May 21 Henlopen Conference Championships at Sussex Pines CC near Georgetown. The team also qualified for this year’s State Championship Tournament, to be held May 27-28 at Maple Dale CC.
Local club competition results
The Kings Creek Country Club 18 Hole Ladies Golf League played a Cross Country game May 15.
Julie Dickson won first place in the first flight, followed by Jo Ann Pearlman in second. Jennifer Falcone took first-place honors in the second flight, while Prabat Karapurkar took second.
Pattie Magee won the closest to the pin contest on the fifth hole at 17-feet-6-inches.
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9 Hole group played a team event May 19. Valerie Evans, Carolyn Shriver, and Stacey Kochanek won first place. Second place went to the team of Sue Eisenbrey, Kathy Nave, and Robbie Monkman.
Jeanne Drake won the closest to the pin contest on the 16th hole with a shot that finished 9-feet-3-inches away.
The Sussex Pines Ladies 18-Holers played a team tournament May 20. Bea Hylbert, Kathy Hudak, and Barb Willin finished in first, with the team of Carol Love, Sandy Harrison, and Hazel Pusey taking second place.
Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club holding 5th annual charity golf tournament
The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club will present its fifth annual charity golf event at The Peninsula on the Indian River Bay Thursday, June 12. The 12:30 p.m. shotgun start is preceded by an 11 a.m. $5,000 50/50 putting contest. The winner of that mini-event will split the proceeds with the Delaware Burn Camp.
Last year’s tournament raised nearly $10,000. The organizers are hoping to improve on that record this year. Local charities that have benefited previously include Habitat for Humanity, Jusst Sooup Ministries, Delaware Food Bank, and the Oak Orchard Riverdale Boys & Girls Club.
Individual player fees are $150, and foursomes are $600. The fee covers golf with cart, the practice range, limited drink tickets, a box lunch, and a gourmet dinner.
