Apply June 2-Aug. 8 for cost sharing assistance on conservation practices

May 29, 2014

The Kent and Sussex conservation districts will accept applications for cost-sharing assistance on cover crops and other conservation practices Monday, June 2, through Friday, Aug. 8. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

This is the only sign-up period for this program, and it will not be extended. All applications will be ranked based on need and funding availability.

Eligible conservation practices include cover crops, manure storage structures, poultry composters, heavy-use area protections, poultry windbreaks, agricultural waste systems, wildlife habitat ponds, water management and more. The Sussex Conservation District will also accept applications for tax ditch maintenance, tax ditch mowing, and tax ditch weed-wiper bar.

These conservation practices have many positive environmental benefits such as reducing excess nutrients, improving ground water quality, and preventing soil erosion.

Sussex County landowners may apply in person at the USDA Service Center at 21315 Berlin Road, Unit 4, in Georgetown. Kent County landowners may apply in person at the USDA Service Center at 800 Bay Road, Suite 2, in Dover.

For further information, call the county conservation district: in Kent County, Paula Kohout at 302-741-2600, Ext. 3; in Sussex County, Deanna Killen at 302-856-3990, Ext. 3.
