Academic Challenge program holds annual awards ceremony

The Academic Challenge Program at Delaware Technical Community College’s Owens Campus held its annual awards ceremony May 19. Academic Challenge is an accelerated English and mathematics program supported by the Sussex County school districts in cooperation with Delaware Tech.

The program allows high school juniors and seniors to earn college credits at Delaware Tech and the University of Delaware while completing their classes in their local high school.

The Outstanding Student Award was given to Bansri M. Patel from Sussex Technical High School. Patel was selected for her outstanding academic performance, program commitment, maturity, positive attitude, enthusiasm and creativity.

The Shauna Rose Kaufman Award was given to Ari H. August from Sussex Technical High School. August was selected for her commitment to help others, community dedication, volunteering, and exploring ways to make a change.

Students honored for their exceptional performance in the AC English component were as follows: Level I Language, Grammar & Writing - Kierstin M. Blatzheim, Sussex Academy; Writing, Research & Presentation - Ashley A Ross, Beacon Middle School; Level 2 World Literature - Ari H. August, Sussex Technical High School; British Literature - Hannah M. Lowe, Cape Henlopen High School; Level 3 American Literature - Molly M. Fulton, Milford High School; Writing & Research - Zachary E. Varrato, Sussex Technical High School.

For the Academic Challenge Delaware Technical Community College and University of Delaware courses in English, student Excellence Award winners were as follows: Level 4 Composition - Peyton F. Carter, Sussex Technical High School; Introduction to Poetry - Maria A. Ferreri, Sussex Technical High School; Level 5 Introduction to Drama - Shelby L. McBroom, Sussex Technical High School; Short Story - Henson Destine, Sussex Technical High School.

Students earning awards for their excellence in the AC mathematics component were the following: Level I Algebra I - Jorge Mendez-Mendoza, Seaford Middle School; Algebra II - Melanie M. McCloy, Beacon Middle School; Level 2 Geometry - Hayden R. McWilliams, Indian River High School; Statistics - Benjamin W. Conrad, Cape Henlopen High School; Level 3 Pre-Calculus A - Nathaniel P. Vincent, Delmar Jr./Sr. High School; Pre-Calculus B - Kevin R. Bradshaw, Delmar Jr./Sr. High School.

Award winners for the Academic Challenge Delaware Technical Community College and University of Delaware courses in mathematics included Level 4 Calculus I - Madison C. MacElrevey, Cape Henlopen High School; Calculus B - Benjamin J. Wiswell, Cape Henlopen High School; Level 5 Calculus C - Christopher M. Ferri, Cape Henlopen High School; Differential Equations - Christopher M. Ferri, Cape Henlopen High School.

All students participating in the Academic Challenge Program are recognized for their commendable performances during the 2013-2014 school year.
