James Paul McDowell, 61, of Georgetown, traded his pilot wings for his heavenly wings Saturday, May 31, 2014.
Jim was born Oct. 30, 1952, to Elizabeth (Zarnoch) McDowell and the late Earl G. McDowell.
After graduating from Salesianum School, he became a member of the Air National Guard where he served as a mechanic. Later, he went on to realize his dream of becoming a pilot, and in this capacity he served as a flight instructor, charter pilot and finally corporate pilot.
When not flying, Jim enjoyed his true passion, spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.
In addition to his mother, Jim is survived by Carol, his wife of 38 years; three daughters, Katie and her husband Dave, Becky and her husband Brian and Erin and her fiancé Hunter; two grandchildren, Raegan and Tyler; two brothers, David (Susan) and Ron (Karen); a sister, Susan White (Bill); mother-in-law, Lois Hitchens (Don); and brother-in-law, Jeff Berryman (Helen); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2014, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Jim’s memory to the Ebenezer U.M. Church food bank at Serve, PO Box 1357, Stafford, VA 22555.
