The NAACP Youth Council asked for money to host financial education workshops for young people, family-friendly fitness events and to send members to a National Convention. We support these goals and will be contributing to the youth council’s work. We support the financial education workshops for young people. According to the U.S. Census there is a wage gap based on gender, race and ethnicity. Overall, women make 77 cents for each dollar a man makes. If that woman happens to be black she makes only 69 cents on the dollar and if she is Hispanic she makes 57 cents. Black and Hispanic men also experience a wage gap.
One of the goals of AAUW is to bring about pay equity to people of all ethnicities, races, and gender. Fitness includes physical activity, healthy eating and emotional well-being. The current generation of teenagers is the unhealthiest in our history. A third of children between 2 and 19 are overweight or obese. They are developing health problems that formerly were only seen in adults. Information and activities related to family-friendly fitness may help this problem. Concerns about emotional well-being can arise from a hostile environment and discrimination such as that expressed by Sam Wilson and Vance Phillips at the Sussex County Council meeting.
We all need to be part of an environment that actively supports equality and inclusion. Some youth council members want to attend a convention in Las Vegas. They themselves did not choose this location. Conferences provide youth with opportunities to raise their level of expectations about themselves and others. They get new ideas and inspiration to create a better life for themselves and others. Let us be sure when they return home to Sussex County that their ideas are valued, their inspiration is encouraged, and that their words fall on respectful ears.
We believe that the NAACP Youth Council has chosen important projects that deserve to be funded. The C-G Branch of AAUW will make a financial contribution to help ensure the projects’ success.
