Rehoboth VFW celebrates Flag Day

June 14 was a special day at the Rehoboth VFW Post 7447 on State Road in Rehoboth Beach. Scholarship and art awards were given out to several high school students in the morning. A chicken barbecue, the first of the season, was held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. The highlight of the day came at 6 p.m.when about 40 members of the Ladies' Auxiliary and Men's Auxiliary, as well as community members and visitors, took time to commemorate Flag Day and honor the many who fought in wars defending the United States or were part of families who supported them.

In the ceremony, Ladies Auxiliary member Robin Stevenson distributed small flags to everyone in attendance. Next, Post Adjutant Art Frampton started the program with the early history of the U.S. flag. Men's Auxiliary President Ed Schaefer and later Ladies Auxiliary Patriotic Instructor Barbara McGowan continued the history of the flag and the changes to it through the years as the country grew.

All stood at attention as Quartermaster Art Frampton led the group in the Salute to the Flag. Post Chaplain Greg Gause, whose granddaughter Brenna Gause received one of the scholarships earlier in the day, finished the program with a heartfelt prayer. As the event concluded, attendees were introduced to new Post Commander Bob McGinniss as well as the Department of Delaware VFW Ladies Auxiliary Patriotic Instructor and Americanism Chair Estelle Tabasko, who is a longtime member and past president of the Rehoboth VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
