Long arm of the law halts our backward progess

Rehoboth Beach Police Officer Talley hollered out to us a week or so ago. Riding bicycles back from Indian River Inlet, we had just crossed Silver Lake and turned left onto the first street over the bridge. Lake Avenue.

Three first-grade words were painted on three signs facing us at the end of the street.  DO NOT ENTER

We heard Officer Talley's voice before we saw him.  Then we saw he was bicycle-mounted like we were.

"Can I talk to you for just a minute?"

I knew what we had done wrong, thinking it probably wasn't all that bad to go the wrong way up a one-way street. But,  I know it's wrong, it can cause problems, and he was right to stop us.

"It's important to follow the rules," he said.  "We had a bicyclist hit here last night on this street. Going the wrong way."

A letter writer in last Friday's Gazette said the same thing and he was right too.  With more and more cyclists in the area, it's important that all of us on two wheels follow the rules of the road so we don't cause problems.

Officer Talley was very nice about it.  We won't do that again.  I don't want to get hit and I don't want to cause a problem. The world has enough without me adding to them.
