Lewes Historic Preservation to meet
The Lewes Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, at city hall. The group will consider a request from the owners of 302 Mulberry St. to renovate a portion of the dwelling. They will also consider a request from the owners of 713 Savannah Road to expand their home and add a garage. The owner and builder of 238 Front St. Lot 5 is requesting permission to build a single-family home on the property. For more information, call city hall at 302-645-7777.
Lewes City Hall closed on July 4
Lewes City Hall and the Board of Public Works office will be closed Friday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. Offices will reopen with regular business hours Monday, July 7.
Smyk and Wilson file for re-election
Sussex County representatives Steve Smyk and Dave Wilson have filed for re-election.
Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton, filed for the District 20 seat June 23. Elected in 2012, Smyk is serving his first term as District 20 representative.
Smyk has two opponents – Don Ayotte, an Independent candidate from Georgetown, filed May 7, and Marie Mayor, a Democrat from Milton, filed Jan. 21.
District 20 moved to Sussex County from New Castle in 2012 when election district lines were redrawn to account for shifts in population. The district represents residents of Lewes, Milton and Harbeson.
Rep. Dave Wilson, R-Bridgeville, filed for the District 35 seat June 20. Wilson has been representing the district since 2008 and has no opponents. The district represents residents of Bridgeville, Greenwood, Ellendale and part of Seaford.
As of press time June 26, 11 of 14 state legislative seats for Sussex County have at least one candidate. The seats without candidates are Senate District 19, which is represented by Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown; Senate District 20, which is represented by Sen. Gerald Hocker, R-Ocean View; and House District 14, which is represented by Speaker of the House Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach.
The filing deadline for all candidates is July 8 at noon.
Rehoboth offices to open July 4
The Rehoboth Beach administrative offices will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 4.
Residential and commercial trash will picked up.
Sussex council takes off two weeks
Sussex County Council will not meet the next two weeks, Tuesday, July 1, and Tuesday, July 8. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, in the county administration building.
Sussex County offices closed for holiday
Sussex County offices will be closed Friday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday and reopen at 8:30 a.m., Monday, July 7.
Sussex council awards nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council presented the following councilmanic grants during its June 24 meeting: $500 to El Centro Cultural for its Festival Hispano in Millsboro; $500 to First State Community Action Agency for its Pinetown Civic Association event; $3,500 to Town of Millville for events; and $2,500 to Seaford Historical Society for project expenses.
Cape Gazette posts early deadlines
Due to the July Fourth holiday falling on a Friday, when post offices will be closed, the Cape Gazette has issued early advertising and news release deadlines for the July 4 edition. The retail advertising deadline for the July 4 edition will be noon, Monday, June 30. The classified ad deadline is 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, which is also the deadline for news releases for July 4.
The retail and classified advertising deadlines for the midweek Tuesday, July 8 edition will be noon, Wednesday, July 2.
The Cape Gazette offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 3-4.
