A corporal with the Delaware State Police is in serious but stable condition after he was shot June 25 near Magnolia.
Cpl. Lloyd M. McCann, 26, was driving northbound on Route 1 north of Milford at 7 a.m. when he spotted a Honda Accord driven by a wanted suspect, said Sgt. Paul Shavack of the Delaware State Police.
McCann activated his lights to stop the Honda driven by Dennis Hicks, 29, of Milford, but Hicks continued northbound to Clapham Road toward Magnolia. Hicks stayed on the road, which becomes South Governor's Avenue extended, where he stopped near West Birdie Lane, Shavack said.
Hicks exited the car with a semiautomatic handgun and opened fire on McCann. McCann fired back striking Hicks in the upper body; McCann was hit in the face and hand.
Hicks was taken to Kent General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:47 a.m.; McCann was taken to Kent General Hospital and flown to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he is in serious but stable condition, Shavack said.
