Pettyjohn and friends to read Declaration of Independence on The Circle July Fourth

June 30, 2014

Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, will be joined by a group of local elected officials Friday, July 4, at noon on The Circle in Georgetown for the second annual live reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Also scheduled to participate are senators Gary Simpson, R-Milford; and Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes; representatives Dave Wilson, R-Seaford; Steve Smyk, R-Milton; and Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown; Georgetown Mayor Bill West; Georgetown Town Councilwoman Chris Lecates; Georgetown Town Councilman Dave Anderson; and Sussex County Councilman Vance Phillips.

Pettyjohn, the event’s host, wishes to invite the general public to come and enjoy the spirit of the holiday, and to watch this tribute to this nation’s Founding Fathers.

“Many people don’t realize the conditions that the colonists endured when they were under the king’s rule,” Pettyjohn said. “The grievances spelled out in this document still drive, to this day, our quest for freedom and independence throughout the world for all people.”
