Milton Century Club awards two $2,000 scholarships

July 16, 2014

The Milton Century Club each year awards scholarships to college-bound 12th-grade girls who reside in the 19968 ZIP code or who were eligible to attend Mariner Middle School in Milton. “The aim of the scholarship program is to encourage young women to attend college,” said club President Maryann Donnan when she announced that this year two scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000, would be awarded.

The 2014 scholarship recipients are twins Megan Hart and Brittany Hart, who graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in June. Both will attend the University of Delaware in the fall. Having captured the DIAA State Championship Division I high jump championship during her senior year, Megan will participate in women’s track and field as a Blue Hen. She plans to major in political science and looks forward to meeting new people and being actively involved on campus and in the community. Brittany is looking forward to taking advantage of the many opportunities offered at the University of Delaware and becoming involved in campus activities. She plans to prepare for a career as a biomedical engineer.

“The Milton Century Club, with just over 50 members, works diligently throughout the year to raise funds for its scholarship program and many other charitable contributions,” said Judy Shandler, chair of the Education Committee. “The members of the Milton Century Club wish both young women success and look forward to learning about their future accomplishments.” Scholarship applications are available in the guidance departments of all area high schools each spring. Home schooled and GED applicants may request an application in the spring by sending an email to judyshandler@comcast.net.

The Milton Century Club is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The GFWC is one of the world’s oldest and largest women’s service organizations dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. Each club sets its agenda and works on projects and programs that address the specific needs of their communities.
