Rehoboth meeting cancelled
The Rehoboth Beach Communications Committee has cancelled its Friday, July 25 meeting due to a lack of agenda items.
The committee’s next scheduled meeting is Friday, Aug. 22.
Rehoboth board to meet July 18
The Rehoboth Beach commissioners will meet at 7 p.m., Friday, July 18, in the city commissioners’ room, to hear a permit of compliance request for the Cellar Door restaurant.
The Cellar Door, 20 Baltimore Ave., is proposing to expand the dining area onto a patio.
The commissioners will consider adoption of a deferred compensation plan for the city’s full-time employees. The city real estate tax rate will also be set, and the commissioners will extend the deadline when the real estate tax is due.
Other new business includes appointing the inspector of elections and two judges to serve as election officials for the Saturday, Aug. 9 municipal election and consider adopting a resolution applying for a planning grant from the Delaware Water Infrastructure Council associated with the renewal of the city’s biosolids permit.
Acres commissioners secure re-election
Three Henlopen Acres commissioners will return to their seats, as they ran unopposed.
Commissioners Winnie Kee, John Staffier and Joni Reich will serve three-year terms and will be sworn in at the town’s organizational meeting in September.
Kee has been serving as president pro tempore, heading the commission since the death of Mayor David Hill June 5. She will be entering her third term as commissioner.
Staffier will serve his second full term after being appointed in March 2011 to fill the unexpired term of Commissioner Woody Miller.
Reich was appointed in June to fill the remainder of Hill’s term.
Unlike Rehoboth Beach, the mayor seat is elected from among the commissioners at the September organizational meeting.
Lewes library asks Sussex for $20,000
The Lewes Public Library capital campaign committee has requested a $20,000 grant from Sussex County as part of its effort to raise funds to build a new $10.5 million library. On the recommendation of Council President Mike Vincent, R-Seaford, council will revisit the request following the county’s annual financial audit.
He said a surplus is expected, with possible funding available for libraries.
In the interim, during the July 15 meeting, council awarded $1,000 to the Lewes library from the councilmanic account of Councilwoman Joan Deaver, D-Rehoboth Beach.
Code of ethics on Sussex council agenda
Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, in the county administration building on The Circle in Georgetown.
Included on the agenda is a presentation from the Delaware Public Integrity Commission on the state’s code of ethics and a 1:30 p.m. public hearing on a conditional-use application for an entertainment venue with temporary camping on 500 acres of farmland near Harbeson. Milton meeting to focus on town center
A comprehensive plan workshop will focus on downtown Milton issues and business climate.
The workshop is at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 19, at the Milton Public Library, 121 Union St.
Join Sen. Pettyjohn for coffee July 19
Sen. Brian Pettyjohn invites his constituents to join him for some coffee and conversation Saturday morning, July 19 in Long Neck.
The Constituent Coffee will be held at the Ocean Grill, 26089 Shoppes at Long Neck Blvd., from 9 to10 a.m.
Pettyjohn encourages District 19 residents to stop by to ask a question or share a concern on issues relating to the district or state government.
He plans to bring attendees up to date on the recently-completed legislative session as well as any pending projects in the district.
Pettyjohn represents the 19th Senatorial District, which includes all or parts of Georgetown, Bridgeville, Seaford, Millsboro, Greenwood, Ellendale, Harbeson, Milton and Long Neck.

John Atkins files for re-election in District 41
Rep. John Atkins, D-Millsboro, filed for re-election to the District 41 seat July 7. Atkins has represented the district as a Democrat since 2008. He previously represented the district as a Republican from 2003 to 2007.
Atkins has one challenger, Republican candidate Richard Collins of Millsboro, who filed May 20. Atkins defeated Collins in the 2012 race for the district seat. The district represents the residents of Millsboro, Dagsboro, Frankford and Selbyville.
Dewey town manager looking for feedback
As a result of concerns raised during a June 20 meeting, Dewey Beach Town Manager Marc Appelbaum has set up a direct phone line for residents and visitors to leave him messages when they see issues they feel need to be addressed.
“In response to the large turnout at the meeting, I would like to continue to hear when you have questions and concerns so that I may help to address them for you,” said Appelbaum in a letter to town residents dated July 3.
The new number is not meant to replace the police department phone number or 9-1-1, said Appelbaum. Callers can leave an anonymous message or contact information. The phone number for messages is 302-227-2173.
Dewey Beach election voter deadline
The deadline to register to vote for Dewey Beach’s 2014 election is 5 p.m., July 15.
Eligible voters have to be at least 18 years old and also a resident, a property owner, hold a valid lease for at least five years, or be a trustee of a trust that’s a property owner.
Registration forms can be found online at the town’s website at www.townofdeweybeach.com. Forms are to be printed out and faxed in to 302-227-8319 or mailed to town hall at 105 Rodney Ave. The town’s election will take place Sept. 20.
Call for Dewey Beach election candidates
The deadline to file for Dewey Beach’s annual municipal election is 5 p.m., Aug. 21.
Interested individuals must be at least 21 years old before the date of the election, have not been convicted of a felony and been a qualified voter for at least one year prior to the election date.
Individuals must send a letter of intent to the town manager and complete a candidate filing form, which can be found on the town’s website at www.townofdeweybeach.com. The election will take place Sept. 20.
Summer food program underway at Lingo Creek
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 will partner with the Delaware Department of Education and the Delaware Food Bank to provide lunch to children in the Millsboro area until Friday, Aug. 15, Monday thru Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lingo Creek Apartments Community Room, 32980 Shoppes at Long Neck Blvd., Millsboro. Lingo Creek Apartments is designated an open site for the lunch program, so no registration is required. Children 17 and younger are invited to come to lunch. Children must eat lunch at the site. Wrong town - In an article regarding statewide primary races that appeared in the July 15 edition of the Cape Gazette, the town of residence for Sean Barney, a Democratic candidate for state treasurer, was incorrect. Barney is a resident of Smyrna.
