St. George's Episcopal Chapel to host revival Aug. 8-10

July 27, 2014

Many people think they know what a revival is, but they’ve never experienced one. An opportunity to participate in a revival will come Friday-Sunday, Aug. 8-10, at St. George’s Episcopal Chapel in Harbeson on Beaver Dam Road.

By definition, a revival is a meeting or series of meetings held to “stimulate or revive religious faith, typically by impassioned messages, thoughtful preaching, prayer, music, praise, public testimony, even dancing.”

St. George’s parishioner Thenia Brasby says she’s been inspired to organize and share a parish and community revival at this time. “It’s a chance for people to revitalize or renew their Christian faith, whether they are churched or have no church affiliation at this time,” she said.

The Rev. Canon Dr. Kortright Davis, professor of theology at Howard University School of Divinity, will lead and preach for the revival. A recognized theologian, he has also served as rector of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. He was born in the West Indies on the island of Antigua and became a priest in 1966 in his home diocese. He served on the Inter-Anglican Doctrinal and Theological Commission, appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, among other callings. He has had the honorary doctor of divinity degree conferred on him by the General Theology Seminary in New York City, and he is the author of several books and papers.

Hours for the revival are 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, with a light lunch at noon; and 9:30 a.m. service Sunday, Aug. 10, all at St. George’s Chapel.

“We pray that God will touch our revival and that souls will be renewed and that everyone will feel unified,” said Brasby.

“The revival is open to anyone who wants to celebrate God’s love,” said the Rev. Max Wolf, rector of the parish of St. George’s Chapel and All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Rehoboth Beach. “We are not trying to recruit people away from other churches. We see this as an opportunity for our parishioners and the community to experience a revival as part of our ongoing, inclusive parish worship. As always here, all are welcome.”
