Cape Senior League Softball All-Stars down Laurel 12-4

The Cape Senior League Softball All-Stars defeated Laurel 12-4 July 17 to advance in the losers' bracket of the 2014 District 3 All-Star Tournament, but forfeited to Woodbridge 7-0 July 18 as they lost numerous players to previous commitments.

Rylee Shockley went four innings on the mound, registering three strikeouts and scattering seven Laurel hits while giving up four runs. Riley Shields came into the game in the bottom of the fifth and struck out four and gave up one hit.

Cape was led from the plate by Elissa Leach, who delivered a three-run homer. Rylee Shockley was 3-for-5, while Shannon Lord batted 2-for-5 with a single and a double, and Kelly Gooden and Hannah Jones both went 2-for-5. Jordyn Virden went 1-for-2 and was hit by a pitch while Kaisey Reed took two for the team, getting on base twice via hits by the pitcher.

Cape opened the tournament with a 13-inning 3-2 loss to Millsboro Georgetown. After earning its forfeit win over Cape, Woodbridge advanced to the championship round, but lost 14-6 to Nanticoke.
