A scooter rider in Rehoboth Beach spent the weekend in the hospital after being hit by an SUV July 18.

The victim, 19, was riding his scooter southbound on King Charles Avenue when he was struck by a silver 2010 Mercedes SUV, operated by a 16-year old Virginia girl. Rehoboth police Chief Keith Banks said victim’s name is not being released at the request of his family.

The Mercedes driver was trying to make a U-turn to park on the east side of King Charles Avenue, police said, initially moving to the right then turning left into the path of the victim’s blue scooter.

The victim hit the driver’s side of the Mercedes.

The driver, whose name Banks said will not be released because she is a juvenile, was charged with making an illegal U-turn, failure to signal, and no proof of insurance.

The victim, a Pennsylvania resident, was knocked unconscious and taken to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. He was later moved to Christiana Hospital in critical but stable condition and was released July 21.
