Wardian races for the ribbon and wins, heads to Ocean City to swim

July 24, 2014

The Seventh Race for the Ribbon 5K was not a race for tortoises, but the after-party was at Greene Turtle on the Boardwalk.

Mike Wardian, 40, a new member of the masters age club, won the race in 16:24 chased to the finish line by Steven Eshelman, 20, of Lincoln in 17:43. Wardian, a world-class ultra marathoner, then headed to Ocean City, Md., for a three-mile swim.

Jenna Farmer, 17, of Lewisberg, Pa., was the top female in 18:55, followed by Jen Cawthern, 40, in 20:27.

The ocean block of Wilmington Avenue is always like a trash truck depot early in the morning, but somehow the runners go out and all are back home in under an hour.

Patrick Kane won the Clydesdale run for men in 20:34 followed by Mark Voichek in 24:26.

Laura Marvin continued her domination in the Filly category with a 24:56.

Some age-group winners in the women's race were Olivia Montini, 9, 24:58; Emma Barthelmess, 11, 22:04; Madison MacElrevey, 17, 21:40; Abby Andrews, 31, 21:57; Michelle Ennis, 40, 22:50; Mardiny Ung, 47, 22:00; and Lori Holdsworth, 53, 23:07.

Twenty-six runners broke 20 minutes in the race while 44 ran under a 7-minute pace.
