Joan M. Porter, active at Epworth Church

Joan M. Porter, 81, of Lewes, formerly of New Castle, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes, surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 14, 1932, in Berwick, Pa., daughter of the late Romaine W. and Grace A. (Holland) Miller.

Mrs. Porter was a 1951 graduate of Berwick High School. She graduated with an associate's degree in business administration from Linden Hall College in Lititz, Pa.

Formerly of Penn Acres in New Castle, she was very active in her church, Asbury UMC. After relocating nearly 25 years ago to Sussex County, Mrs. Porter joined Epworth UMC Church in Rehoboth Beach, where she continued to be active. She enjoyed time spent at the beach or boating with family and friends on local waters.

Mrs. Porter loved putting together yard sales and the enjoyment her wares brought to others. She was a member of the Del Tech Association, Cape Henlopen Senior Center and Mulberry Civic Association. Mrs. Porter will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Lewis Porter. She is survived by three sons: Wade A. Porter of Frankford, Mark W. Porter of Wilmington and Todd A. Porter and wife Erin of Newark; a daughter, Lisa K. Porter of Dover; eight grandchildren: Tina (Brett), Michael, Matthew, Alissa, Ryan, Bridget, Isabella and Joshua; one great-granddaughter, Alesia; a sister, Jean M. Geiger of Tamaqua, Pa.; a brother, Dr. James D. Miller of Reading, Pa.; sister in-law, Peggy Miller of Lockhaven, Pa.; and her beloved canine companion, Sadie and three feline companions: Fritz, Molly and Charlie.

A Celebration of Mrs. Porter's Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 25, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Faithful Friends, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19801, or Contractors for a Cause, 111 Atlantic Ave., Suite 8, Ocean View, DE 19970.
