Lemonade stand raises funds for the needy

In early June, Christine Roberts and her neighbors on Carolina Street in Dewey Beach decided to have a communal yard sale. Roberts' daughter, Eleanor, wanted to do something too, so she, with help from her father, decided to set up a lemonade stand with the proceeds going to the needy in eastern Sussex County.

The stand was a roaring success. Proceeds went to the Community Resource Center to help those in need. Father Max Wolf, rector of the All Saints' and St. George’s Episcopal Parish, said, "Eleanor, at the young age of five and a half years, is already striving to live by her baptismal vows to love her neighbor and respect the dignity of every human being.”  He said he is reminded of Matthew Chapter 25 where Jesus teaches that in serving those in need, we serve Christ himself.

Eleanor said she did not charge for the lemonade, but asked her customers to make a contribution to the needy. She said, “Everyone was so generous!" She plans to open another lemonade stand on Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

"If you are near Carolina Street, stop by and enjoy Eleanor’s delicious lemonade," she said.

Eleanor will reopen her lemonade stand Saturday, Aug. 30, in another fundraising effort.
