Get out and vote Aug. 9 in Rehoboth

August 5, 2014

As election day looms, I am writing in memory of Joanne Hess, who died November, 2013, and to whom the Rehoboth Beach elections were very important. She was the person responsible for the wonderful Get Out And Vote ads each year in this paper, which always featured dogs (and occasional cats) on a full page, four color ad.

Two generations of our White West Highland Terrier pooches appeared in her ads. She also staged several pet parades in the parking lot outside the voting booths. She, and her wonderful ads, and her indomitable spirit, are missed.

A Californian who worked for 41 years in D.C. for the National Geographic, she embraced Rehoboth Beach with a deep and endearing affection. She was a civic watchdog, greeter at the farmers market and made us a better place in many other ways.

I will think of her with a special affection as I vote the Cooper, Markert, Zellers ticket, as I am certain she would have done. I am of course certain others will vote differently.

But, whatever, in Joanne's memory.... Get out and vote (Woof! Woof!)
