Georgetown woman dies from injuries sustained in late July crash

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash that occurred July 24, which resulted in the death of a 76-year-old woman.The incident occurred around 11:42 a.m. as James L. Walter, 79, of Delmar, was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Shortly Road approaching the intersection of East Piney Grove Road.

Della G. Mellington of Georgetown was operating a 1999 Pontiac Montana westbound on East Piney Grove Road and failed to remain stopped at the posted stop sign and pulled out into the path of the truck causing it to strike the Pontiac on the driver's side.

James Walter was properly restrained and was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was treated and released.

Della Mellington was properly restrained and was initially airlifted to Kent General Hospital before being flown to Christiana Medical Center with serious injuries. She died on July 29, while in the care of Seasons Hospice of Newark.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into this incident.
