Sussex approves Cadbury expansion

Zoning change allows for 32 new units

Cadbury at Lewes has been given the go-ahead to expand.

At its Aug. 5 meeting, Sussex County Council unanimously approved an application to change zoning of a 5-acre parcel on the western boundary of the community from AR-1, agricultural-residential, to MR-RPC medium density residential district.

The change in zone will allow construction of four buildings containing 29 apartments in the 5-acre parcel and three units in the existing facility. The buildings will share two parking lots.

Attorney Robert Gibbs said the community on Gills Neck Road is at 90 percent capacity and additional units are needed for future growth.

A 30-foot landscaped buffer – which starts at Gills Neck Road and runs parallel to the community – will be relocated to the western edge of the new parcel. Cadbury has plans to purchase the parcel from the Mitchell family.

The final site plan for the project will be subject to review and approval of the planning and zoning commission.

Cadbury's 215 units are a mix of cottages and apartments. Opened in 2007, Cadbury offers several options for its senior residents including independent living, assisted living, memory care and rehabilitation and nursing care.
